BLOG: Next New

A new media that doesn't exist could be a sort of real life extension of Facebook in which people rate you after every interaction with you. It would have to be able to sense who is around you and who you interact with. This idea comes from a show called Black Mirror. It is a modern version of the twilight zone of sorts with utopian societies that involve some type of technology and new media. But basically it people after interacting or seeing something you post on Facebook or any social media would rate you out of five stars. The average number of stars was then looked at as reference to what kind of person you are. The rating was taken way too seriously in the show but I feel that if looked at like a credit score of sorts it could help when judging what kind of person to hire for a job or just to show how they interact with people. It could have problems could use some adjusting but it could be a great idea. It could help people be authentic in the sense that a crook mechanic would have so many bad ratings he'd go out of business because no one goes to him any more. Not to say this this new media would be perfect but its an idea.

  1. I saw that episode of Black Mirror and I thought that the idea of the rating system was interesting as well. The show definitely played it out as technology that ultimately enforces discrimination based on social standings, and although it may have its possible benefits, the negative consequences of the use of such a rating system is frightening.

  2. That would be a really interesting idea. It would definitely make everyone to be on their toes about every interaction they have with others. I think I would be end up being a "Hot or Not" rating system, and that would be terrible. But I think the idea would be really cool when looking at it in terms of a hiring system. I would definitely use it if I was looking to recruit people into my firm or company. I agree its not a perfect idea, but its definitely a cool idea to implement if looked further into.

  3. If a rating system like this was used on a social media platform like Facebook, it would probably become a way of online dating. But if was used on a more formal platform like LinkedIn, it could be very beneficial in the hiring process. LinkedIn have something similar to this where one of a user's connections can endorse their skill. I can see LinkedIn integrating a rating system and maybe even a way to leave a comment of their opinions on a user.
